Meet the Mom Monday - Erica Tharrington (School Teacher, Doula, Co-Owner of A Day To Play Design Co.)

Tell us a little bit about yourself and how you support the Charlottesville community?

I am a self-proclaimed busy-bee! I'm a middle school teacher, a doula, and co-owner of a Montessori-inspired design company, A Day to Play Design Co.

If we want to support you and learn more about your business, how can we find you?

What inspired you to start your own business?

My daughter, Fern, inspired me to start both businesses.

My journey to a healthy pregnancy was far from a fairytale; so, when I was finally pregnant I did a lot of research, hired a doula, and trusted my body. My pregnancy and birth were empowering! I truly want every woman to have the opportunity to feel the way I did which is what led me to pursue doula training.

As Fern began to grow and develop, I quickly became drawn to the Montessori method. I loved how this methodology fostered independence and how the Montessori-inspired toys lent themselves to our eco-conscious and minimalist lifestyle. It wasn’t long before my friend, Caroline, and I had created a business plan. We combined our backgrounds- her interior design and my education- to create our company with the goal of curating beautiful spaces (children’s bedrooms, nurseries and playrooms) that evoke the child’s imagination and curiosity.

What advice would you give to another mom looking to start her own business?

The same thing I tell my students- no challenge, no change! It is a lot of work to pursue a business idea, but if it’s something you are truly passionate about then it will all be worth it. The folks I’ve met, the knowledge I’ve gained, and pride that I feel in all my work keeps me motivated!

How do you manage home life and work life?

I am incredibly fortunate to have Clay to share the load- he is a kick-butt dad and my number one fan helping me along. Nonetheless, it’s always important to remember that you can’t pour from an empty cup. Saying “no” to things in order to maintain balance is a skill that I’m still fine-tuning.

What are your top 3 must dos in the Charlottesville/surrounding area?

1. Hike! There are so many wonderful trails in our area, some of my favorite are: Old Rag, The Rivanna, Mint Springs, and of course, Humpback

2. Take a drive on the Blue Ridge Parkway

3. Pick apples at Chile’s, Carter Mountain or Henley's

What is your favorite Green Bean product and why?

Oh, this is a hard one!

My favorite gift to give is a Kickee Pants onesie. They are buttery soft and have zippers for effortless diaper changes.

I’m currently obsessed with the Quincy Mae dresses for Fern paired with her little, Bobux boots. They are the perfect Fall combo!

Tell us one of your favorite “mom hacks”!

Scissors to cut food- no one has time to tediously cut all those choking hazards! Haha

Share one of your family’s favorite recipes!

I LOVE all of the Half Baked Harvest recipes, but chicken piccata is my comfort food!
